As Above

December 2012

This is the first edition of  “As Above”, a study and artistic/poetic exploration of the site of the church of Old St John the Baptist in Boughton , Northamptonshire. This boxed edition is the culmination of almost a year’s work.  We came across the site in early 2011, and since then, numerous visits have taken me on a very personal journey through the seasons. The undertaking of this project became a minor obsession, and in this old church site, I started to discover not only the beauty of the place, but also it’s history, mythology, and symbolism. The project itself touches upon concepts of mortality, transience, memory, and loss, and this will inevitably evolve and resonate long after this little box goes out into the world.

As I have stated in my field notes, the history of this place is poorly documented.  Despite lengthy visits to the County Records Office, the Northampton Museum, and the Northampton Public Library, I have been unable to uncover very much about the history of the church itself (other than as a ruin) or the old hamlet of Boughton which I believe used to be situated nearby.

The historical notes contained within this project consist of fragments found in local archives, and from investigations conducted locally, and this is the first time to my knowledge, that all of this information has been assembled in one place. This project is to be construed as not only an art edition, but a continued investigation into the site and it’s history. Within the confines of this box, I have attempted to supplement the historical documents with my own notes, personal insights and musings, and I hope that these will serve to enhance your impression of the site from afar. Since this project was assembled, a large notice has appeared at the church gates, warning that the site is not to be trespassed upon, so I dearly hope that my own intrusions have not contributed to this move!
